What is Ikebana?
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging focusing on harmony, minimalism and the expressive use of line and space. Our intro class translates these principles into practical exercises using locally sourced seasonal stems.

What you'll learn
- Basic ikebana structure: shin, soe, and hikae
- Choosing and preparing seasonal NZ materials
- Placement, balance and negative space
- Simple kenzan (frog) work and container selection
Core principles
We emphasise observation and restraint — teaching students to see stems, branches and blooms as lines and planes rather than just colour. Exercises are structured and repeatable for steady progress.
- Line comes first — learn to read the stem
- Harmony with container and space
- Minimalism and seasonal awareness

Instructor — Hana Mori
Hana is experienced in both traditional ikebana schools and contemporary NZ floral practice. She focuses on calm, clear instruction and practical demonstrations that suit beginners.
